Origin: Vereinigte Kärntner Brauereien (Villach, Austria)
Notes: Yes, it’s another Austrian beer, but at least today’s a different style.
Märzen (“March” in German) was originally brewed in the 3rd month when the weather is still cool. The beer would then be stored in caves or cellars, and drawn up for consumption in the hot summer months. By October, when the weather is cool enough to brew again, brewers would need to empty their kegs out to make new stuff. How? By drinking the remaining beer during Oktoberfest, of course. Genius, I say!
I don’t think I’ve ever had the problem of needing to clear out old beer in the fridge to make room for new ones. If anything, it’s looking into an empty fridge and wondering where all the beer’s gone. If any of you have limited storage, feel free to get in touch with me. I’d be glad to help.
